Day 4 of Living on the Edge – Album technical notes OM113H

This is Corrie Lynn Green’s fourth album, and the most ambitious one yet. It uses most of the same recording techniques as her previous albums.

The nine songs on this album were recorded between January and July 2025 during four periods of two-to-four-day recording sessions. Most of the songs were recorded all at once, with all the musicians and Corrie performing in the studio. Some of Corrie’s vocals are the original vocal recorded while everyone played. Others were overdubbed the next day.

Microphones used:

AEA R44C ribbon mic on all vocals and upright bass.

AEA R88 stereo ribbon mic on drums, piano, violin, and as the sole microphone on “Never Grow Old.”

Senneheiser MKH416 RF condenser on cello.

Sennheiser MKH8050 RF condenser on mandolin.

Flea C12 condenser microphones, matched pair, on Adam Monaco’s acoustic guitar and sometimes on mandolin.

Royer R121 ribbon microphone on electric guitar amplifiers.

AEA KU5 ribbon microphones (passive) matched pair on Tom Spiker’s acoustic guitar.

The output from the microphones went through D.W. Fearn VT-1, VT-2, and VT-24 vacuum tube microphone preamplifiers, and then to a pair of Merging Technologies Hapi analog-to-digital converters. Pyramix software, also by Merging Technologies, was used to capture the audio to a computer hard disc.

The individual instrument and vocal tracks are recorded in DSD256, a very high-resolution digital format that is fundamentally different from the PCM format used for most recording (and for CDs and streaming). DSD256 has a sample rate of 11.2MHz.

The DSD tracks were converted to 32-bit, 192kHz sample rate PCM for mixing. D.W. Fearn VT-4 and VT-5 equalizers, and VT-7 compressors were used when needed. All audio went through 100% vacuum tube equipment, with the exception of the input stage of the Merging A to D converters.

Quantec 2496 and Bricasti M7 hardware reverb devices were added during mixing.

The lacquer master for the vinyl version of this album was cut by Studio 4 Vinyl. The album was pressed by Studio 4 Vinyl using 180-gram audiophile-grade vinyl.

All tracks were recorded and mixed at D.W. Fearn Studios in Chester County, PA, USA.
